The Senate has passed the James R. Dominguez bill (S. 4908), sending it to the President’s desk for final approval. The legislation honors Border Patrol Agent James Ray Dominguez by renaming the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 90 West in Uvalde County, Texas, as the James R. Dominguez Border Patrol Checkpoint.
Agent Dominguez, who served with the U.S. Border Patrol from 2000 until his death in 2012, was assigned to the Uvalde Station in the Del Rio Sector. On July 19, 2012, while assisting a stranded motorist with a flat tire, he stopped to clear debris along U.S. Highway 90 near Cline, Texas. Tragically, he was struck by a passing vehicle and lost his life.
Senator John Cornyn praised Dominguez’s service, stating, “Agent Dominguez was a courageous officer, loving father, and devoted public servant who tragically died while serving his fellow Texans. I’m proud to support the renaming of this Border Patrol checkpoint in his honor as a reminder of his impressive legacy as not only a respected agent, but also a good Texan, who served his community selflessly and humbly.” Senator Ted Cruz added, “Agent Dominguez was a patriot, a dedicated public servant, and a devoted husband and father. His legacy will continue to inspire the men and women of our Border Patrol to serve with the same selflessness.”
The bipartisan legislation was supported by Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin and led in the House by Congressman Tony Gonzales, where it passed earlier this year. Jason Owens, Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, expressed his gratitude on LinkedIn, saying, “After years of effort, we will finally be able to honor our fallen brother in a very special way.”
The renaming of the checkpoint stands as a lasting tribute to Agent Dominguez’s service and sacrifice, symbolizing his dedication to the safety and well-being of his community.
