Macron Touts France’s Nuclear Arsenal as Allies Look Beyond U.S. Umbrella

By: Noemie Bisserbe for the WSJ

PARIS—French President Emmanuel Macron is showcasing France’s plans to upgrade its nuclear arsenal as he seeks to engage in talks with Germany and other European powers about extending his country’s nuclear umbrella.

On Tuesday, Macron visited an air base near the Eastern town of Luxeuil-les-Bains, announcing plans to spend close to 1.5 billion euros, or $1.6 billion, to modernize the facility so that it can host a fleet of 40 advanced Rafale jets by 2035. The jets will carry next-generation hypersonic missiles, equipped with nuclear warheads, that are expected to have a range of more than 600 miles, twice that of its predecessors.
