Dr. Philip Zimbardo

Philip G. Zimbardo, PhD, an internationally acclaimed professor of psychology and one of the most influential figures in modern psychology, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, at his home in San Francisco, surrounded by his family. He was 91.

Zimbardo was a Professor Emeritus at Stanford University and a former president of the American Psychological Association (APA). Throughout his career, he made groundbreaking contributions to the field of psychology, leaving a permanent mark on both academia and the public’s understanding of human behavior. His work spanned a broad range of topics, including persuasion, obedience, shyness, time perspective, and the nature of evil.

Perhaps best known for his Stanford Prison Experiment, Zimbardo explored the dynamics of authority and submission, demonstrating how ordinary people can commit extraordinary acts under the right circumstances. This landmark study brought widespread attention to the concept of “deindividuation” and the powerful effects of situational forces on behavior. His findings from the experiment, detailed in his bestselling book, The Lucifer Effect, continue to be referenced in discussions on ethics, psychology, and human nature.

Zimbardo was also deeply committed to educating the public about psychology. He co-created and hosted the Discovering Psychology television series, which brought psychological principles into classrooms and homes worldwide. His textbooks, including multiple editions of Psychology and Life, became staples for students across the globe, while his trade books, such as Shyness and The Time Paradox, have been translated into several languages.

Zimbardo was more than just a scholar—he was a mentor and an advocate for social change. He believed deeply in the idea of “giving psychology away,” using his knowledge to make the world a better place. In 2010, he founded the Heroic Imagination Project, a nonprofit organization designed to inspire positive social action and combat negative behaviors like bullying, passive bystanding, and conformity. The program’s reach extended across the globe, with educational initiatives in countries such as Hungary, Poland, Italy, Indonesia, and the United States.

Beyond his academic accomplishments, Zimbardo was recognized for his dedication to improving educational opportunities for underserved populations. His passion for education led him to establish a scholarship fund for youth in Sicily, ensuring access to higher education for young people who might otherwise have been denied the opportunity.

Throughout his career, Zimbardo published over 500 articles, book chapters, and books, earning countless awards for his teaching, research, and contributions to social psychology.
