Portugal Selects Turkish Firm STM to Build Two Advanced Logistics Ships

Portugal has awarded a contract to Turkish defense company STM for the construction of two Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher and Logistics Ships (AOR+) for the Portuguese Navy.

STM’s proposal was chosen following a recent competitive tender process that included other international companies. This contract marks the first instance of Türkiye exporting military vessels to an EU and NATO member state through STM.

This deal aligns with Portugal’s strategic objective to enhance its naval fleet’s capabilities and bolster logistical support for both domestic and international operations.

The AOR+ vessels will be equipped to effectively transport and resupply naval units at sea with vital resources, including fuel, aviation fuel, drinking water, general cargo, and ammunition. Furthermore, thanks to their modular design, these ships will possess the flexibility to perform additional logistical functions and, when necessary, provide crucial hospital support in the event of disasters.

Construction is set to commence in Turkey in 2025, with the delivery of both ships anticipated by 2028.

About the AOR+

The Auxiliary Oiler Replenisher and Logistics Ships will feature a modular design. In addition to providing logistical support, the ships will have the capacity to transport armored vehicles, enabling them to support joint and amphibious operations. With an aft vehicle ramp, each vessel will be capable of carrying up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles.

The vessels, measuring 137 meters in length with a displacement of 11,000 tons and a maximum speed of over 18 knots, will be capable of operating continuously at sea for up to 90 days. Each ship will accommodate 100 personnel and transport up to 20 light tactical armored vehicles. Equipped with advanced sensors and weapon systems, the ships will primarily support air defense operations while being capable of engaging in all principal warfare functions. The vessels will feature close-in weapon systems, 12.7 mm remote-controlled weapon systems and chaff/decoy systems, alongside a range of advanced sensors. For helicopter operations, the ships will include a landing platform for helicopters and UAVs, as well as a UAV hangar.
